By Yulianne Lisyia Widiawan (Communication Science Student of UBM Serpong Class of 2022) – The Student Association of Communication Science Program (COMRADE) at the Serpong campus has successfully held a Public Speaking webinar with the theme “Improve Your Public Speaking and Show Your Quality” on Saturday, (11/02) at 1:00 PM WIB and was attended by approximately 80 participants through a virtual Zoom Meeting.
This webinar was specifically aimed at active students of the Communication Science Program and was hosted by Swarafa Dang Kayla as the MC and attended by Ms. Caroline Fransiska S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom as the Supervisor of COMRADE Serpong, Ignasius Liliek Senaharjanta, S.Sn., M.I.Kom as the Supervisor of Click, Bernard Realino Danu Kristianto, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom as the Supervisor of VITE, Kristin Engjelima Julwinda Nomleni, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom as the Supervisor of NCC, Christina Tandaju, S.I.Kom, M.Si as the Supervisor of BIEMS Radio, Veronika Ita Karina Tarigan, S.Sos., M.I.Kom as the Supervisor of JIM

The topic raised in this webinar was how to improve public speaking skills. Therefore, COMRADE invited the CEO of Communicasting, Kak Tony Sahputra, as a speaker who shared his knowledge with the Communication Science Program students. In addition, Ms. Caroline Fransiska also guided the material presentation as the webinar moderator.
Kak Tony Sahputra explained that a person’s fear of speaking in public is caused by Glossophobia, which is a type of social phobia that can happen to anyone with the emergence of excessive anxiety or fear when speaking in front of many people. The symptoms, causes, and solutions for handling Glossophobia were also explained. Other things that should be done before starting activities related to public speaking include facial muscle exercises, anchoring, paying attention to visuals starting from physical appearance, clothing, and makeup, avoiding consuming oily spicy food or cold drinks, being the best version of oneself, doing smile voice, and practicing a lot. The discussion of public speaking was concluded with a quote from Kak Tony Sahputra, “Live based on principles, not archives, so life is more enjoyable.”
In the Q&A session, Ms. Caroline as the moderator started the session by asking interesting questions that might also be a problem for students related to how to improve so that filler words do not come out during public speaking activities. Kak Tony Sahputra answered that filler words are common and understandable, but we also have to overcome them by not voicing the filler words but shifting them into the mind so that only a pause is heard. So, to minimize these filler words, consistency and persistence are needed. There was also a question from one of the students named Cindy who asked, “Has Kak Tony Sahputra ever blanked on stage? If yes, how did he overcome that blank?” Kak Tony Sahputra answered that of course, he had experienced it and responded by staying silent for a moment or changing the situation to a more relaxed and humorous one by saying “oh, I blanked or where did I stop earlier, I forgot.” Blank is very understandable, provided that we have prepared well so that we can continue with the material or what will be presented.
At the end of the webinar, there was a session of Token of Appreciation given by Ms. Caroline Fransiska as the moderator to Kak Tony Sahputra as a form of gratitude for taking the time to share knowledge with the Communication Science Program students at Bunda Mulia University
