By Axel Samuel Gianaldy (Communication Science student at UBM Serpong Campus, Class of 2021) – The Marketing Department of Universitas Bunda Mulia Serpong Campus held a Campus Visit by inviting Strada Thomas Aquino High School Tangerang Kota for a session on “Public Speaking: The Art of Speaking” on Tuesday, (07/02) at 07.30-13.00 in UBM Lecture Hall, Alam Sutera, attended by 254 participants.
This Campus Visit featured Mrs. Veronika Ita Karina Tarigan, S.Sos., M.I.Kom as the moderator and Glenys Octania as the speaker, who is a Producer & News Presenter for Kompas TV, to deliver the material to the students of Strada Thomas Aquino High School Tangerang Kota.
In the session, Glenys Octania presented the basics, methods, tips and tricks for Public Speaking. She explained that public speaking is an oral communication activity that is done directly in public or in front of a group of people, such as delivering a speech or an oration. She also stated that the message delivered is more structured by using more formal grammar than in a conversation, with a more polite body language and a message that can be understood.
Public speaking has several basics and methods, namely, Impromptu or Ad Libitum or spontaneity, Manuscript or Script, Memoriter or Memorization, Extempore or Using Note. In doing public speaking, there are also obstacles such as stage fright and not mastering the material, and to overcome these, there are several tips and tricks, such as controlling oneself with facial warm-up or exercises, knowing our audience, mastering the material and practicing, paying attention to body language (expression or intonation), and preparing supporting tools.
