Tangerang, May 1, 2025 – The Dhammamitta Buddhist Student Family (KMB) of Serpong, in collaboration with the youth community of Vihara Padumuttara known as Dhammadharassa, organized two meaningful activities: Fang Sheng and Social Service. These activities are a tangible expression of Buddhist teachings that emphasize generosity and respect for life. Fang Sheng and Social Service not only aim to help those in need but also serve as a means to cultivate virtue, build empathy, and raise awareness that true happiness arises from sincere and selfless good deeds.
As a manifestation of these values, the activities carried the theme “Inner Happiness”, emphasizing that happiness does not solely come from external conditions, but can be created from within through the choice to do good, share, and show compassion to all living beings.
To support the success of these events, a donation open booth was held beforehand at the Student Lounge on the 6th floor of Universitas Bunda Mulia, Serpong Campus. This open booth ran from April 23 to 25, 2025, providing an opportunity for friends and the public to participate by donating money or goods. The aim was to expand the outreach and positive impact, while also encouraging a spirit of giving among the academic community of Universitas Bunda Mulia and the wider public.
The event began with the Social Service activity, held at the Kasih Ayah Bunda Nursing Home located in Karawaci, Tangerang. It started with an opening by the MC, followed by speeches from the event chairperson, a Dhammadharassa representative, and the nursing home management. The event continued with a sharing session between the volunteers and the elderly, providing a chance to exchange stories and experiences. In this session, the volunteers also washed the hands and feet of the elderly as a gesture of respect and affection. This moment created space for mutual reflection and strengthened intergenerational bonds filled with respect and empathy.
The atmosphere became warmer with a sing-along session, where volunteers and the elderly sang cheerful songs together, such as Kemesraan, Bengawan Solo, Unchained Melody, and more. As a closing to this session, the volunteers sang the song “Sungguh Indah”, which reflected the beauty of togetherness and love fostered during the event.
The next part of the event was the symbolic handover of donations, represented by the event chairperson from KMB Dhammamitta Serpong and a representative from Dhammadharassa to the nursing home. These donations were the result of contributions from various parties, both in monetary and goods form. The event concluded with a group photo session as a keepsake of the shared experience.
Following that, the event continued with the Fang Sheng ceremony, a Buddhist practice of releasing living beings as a form of respect for life and the application of the First Precept: “Not to kill any living being.” The ceremony began with a prayer led by Samanera Sahito from Vihara Dharma Ratna and was moderated by Pandita Hendrian Yonata. The animals released during the ceremony were catfish and birds, and the release was done with great care. Some volunteers went on boats with the pandita to ensure that the catfish were released far from fishing areas, allowing them to live freely and safely.
The Fang Sheng ceremony ended with a closing prayer led by Samanera Sahito, followed by the offering of amisa puja to him by Pandita Hendrian Yonata. The event concluded with a group photo session as a meaningful memento of the occasion.
May the Fang Sheng and Social Service event themed “Inner Happiness” bring positive benefits to all participants and foster empathy, unity, and compassion toward others. We also extend our gratitude to all donors who contributed money, goods, and support, making this event run smoothly and successfully. Lastly, we hope this event continues to strengthen the sense of togetherness and care among us all and inspires more individuals to do good and share love with all living beings.
