Competition in the job market is increasingly fierce. Hundreds of thousands of new graduates graduate each year, and a degree alone is no longer enough to secure your dream job. As a prospective student, the most crucial first step is ensuring the “vehicle” you choose has a proven reputation. This is where university accreditation plays a crucial role as the foundation for passing the rigorous selection process in the future. So, what exactly differentiates campus accreditation levels?
Acording to Permendikbud No. 49 of 2020 states that Accreditation is an Assessment conducted by BAN-PT (National Accreditation Board for Higher Education) to determine the eligibility of a Study Program or Higher Education Institution.
In the accreditation process, University assessments cover various aspects such as the curriculum used, the quality of the teachers (lecturers), and the achievements of the university’s students. According to Minister of Education and Culture Regulation No. 49 of 2020, the accreditation naming system, which previously used letters (A, B, and C), has been translated into “Unggul,” “Very Good,” and “Good.” Here are the differences:
Excellent or A accreditation is the highest achievement with an assessment score of ≥ 361 on a scale of 400. Campuses or study programs that hold Excellent status have proven that their education system, research quality, and campus ecosystem are not just “passing standards,” but are far above the national average.
“Very Good” (301–360) and “Good” (200–300) ratings indicate that the institution has met the government’s operational standards for eligibility. In general, campuses with this rating remain eligible and legitimate to provide education. However, there’s usually still obvious room for improvement. These shortcomings could include a disproportionate faculty-to-student ratio, limited practical facilities, or a curriculum that isn’t directly integrated with current industry trends.
Choosing a university should not be done carelessly, because accreditation is a long-term investment for the future of your career and education. Make sure you choose an educational institution that is not only promising, but has proven its quality through official recognition from BAN-PT.
