UBM Digital Business Students Raise Sumatran Disaster Issue at the 2025 National Essay Competition
Jakarta, 05/02/2026 – Students of the Digital Business Study Program at Bunda Mulia University have once again achieved success through academic activities at the national level . Rafaela Marsyel Demawan was selected to represent the campus in the prestigious competition “AKSI – 2025 NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION CREATING EVENT” organized by Padang State University . This competition is a strategic forum for students to convey critical and solution-oriented ideas to current disaster issues in Indonesia .
Focus on the Role of Social Media in Disasters
This national event carries the theme “The role of social media during and after disasters: information vs. disinformation .” Responding to this theme, Rafaela raised a specific case study regarding flash floods in Sumatra . The ideas presented emphasized the vital function of social media in supporting the evacuation process and emergency disaster management . Social media is considered capable of accelerating the dissemination of field information, increasing public awareness, and building solidarity among the wider community . This topic selection is highly relevant to Indonesia’s condition as a disaster-prone country, where the rapid and accurate dissemination of information can save lives .
Thorough Preparation and Full Faculty Support
In preparing her essay since the end of 2025, Rafaela received intensive guidance from Mr. Reynard JN Makarawung, SE, MM, as her Supervisor . The guidance focused on strengthening ideas, evaluating drafts, and brainstorming to develop ideas sharply . With a brilliant academic track record—reflected by her 3.97 GPA—Rafaela aims to break into the top 3 nationally . This student’s innovative step also received the approval and full support of the study program and faculty leadership.
