Oleh: Sylviana Hannyca Ho (Mahasiswi Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi Angkatan 2024) — Sabtu (19/07), Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM) kembali menunjukkan komitmennya dalam mendukung internasionalisasi pendidikan melalui kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) Internasional bertajuk “Intercultural Communication Between Indonesia and Malaysia in the Society 5.0 Era: Strengthening ASEAN Academic Collaboration through Cultural Understanding and Digital Communication” di Pondok Modern Zakat Kedah (PMZK), Kedah, Malaysia. Kegiatan ini merupakan bagian dari Academic Mobility Program V: Community Service Program & Institutional Collaboration Exploration yang diselenggarakan oleh Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) bekerja sama dengan Indonesian Multidisciplinary Lecturer Community (IMLC). Program ini melibatkan 51 akademisi dari berbagai perguruan tinggi di Indonesia yang terbagi ke dalam empat klaster keilmuan. Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Bunda Mulia diwakili oleh Anastasia Kristi Damayanti, S.Sn., M.Si., Dr. Rina Sovianti, S.I.P., M.I.Kom., serta mahasiswi Michele Aurelia sebagai bagian dari klaster Education, Psychology, Communication and Human Development.
By Sylviana Hannyca Ho (Communication Studies Student, Class of 2024) — On Saturday (July 19), Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM) once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting the internationalization of education through an International Community Service Program entitled “Intercultural Communication Between Indonesia and Malaysia in the Society 5.0 Era: Strengthening ASEAN Academic Collaboration through Cultural Understanding and Digital Communication”, held at Pondok Modern Zakat Kedah (PMZK), Kedah, Malaysia. The program was part of the Academic Mobility Program V: Community Service Program & Institutional Collaboration Exploration, organized by the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), in collaboration with the Indonesian Multidisciplinary Lecturer Community (IMLC). The program involved 51 academics from various higher education institutions across Indonesia, who were divided into four academic clusters. The Communication Studies Program of Universitas Bunda Mulia was represented by Anastasia Kristi Damayanti, S.Sn., M.Si., Dr. Rina Sovianti, S.I.P., M.I.Kom., and student Michele Aurelia as members of the Education, Psychology, Communication, and Human Development cluster.

Dalam kegiatan ini, sebanyak 35 siswa Pondok Modern Zakat Kedah mengikuti sesi edukasi bertema Intercultural Communication Between Indonesia and Malaysia in the Society 5.0 Era. Materi disampaikan secara dwibahasa, yaitu Bahasa Indonesia/Melayu dan Bahasa Inggris, melalui presentasi interaktif, diskusi, kuis, serta refleksi budaya. Peserta diberikan pemahaman mengenai pentingnya komunikasi lintas budaya, literasi digital, serta kesiapan generasi muda dalam menghadapi kolaborasi regional di era Society 5.0. Selain itu, peserta juga diajak memahami bahwa perkembangan teknologi dan kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligence/AI) perlu diimbangi dengan sikap empati, penghormatan terhadap keberagaman budaya, serta kemampuan membangun komunikasi yang inklusif sebagai bekal menghadapi tantangan di kawasan ASEAN. Antusiasme peserta terlihat selama sesi berlangsung, khususnya ketika membahas perbedaan bahasa Indonesia dan Malaysia, etika komunikasi lintas budaya, serta simulasi penyelesaian kesalahpahaman dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi, kegiatan memperoleh respons yang sangat baik dengan tingkat pemahaman peserta mencapai rata-rata 3,39 dan kualitas pelaksanaan program sebesar 3,31 dari skala 4.
During the program, 35 students from Pondok Modern Zakat Kedah participated in an educational session themed “Intercultural Communication Between Indonesia and Malaysia in the Society 5.0 Era.” The session was delivered bilingually in Indonesian/Malay and English through interactive presentations, discussions, quizzes, and cultural reflection activities. Participants gained insights into the importance of intercultural communication, digital literacy, and the readiness of young people to engage in regional collaboration in the Society 5.0 era. They were also encouraged to understand that the rapid advancement of technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be balanced with empathy, respect for cultural diversity, and the ability to build inclusive communication as essential competencies for addressing challenges within the ASEAN region. The participants demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm throughout the session, particularly during discussions on the differences between the Indonesian and Malaysian languages, intercultural communication etiquette, and simulations of resolving cross-cultural misunderstandings in everyday situations. Based on the evaluation results, the program received highly positive feedback, with participants’ average level of understanding reaching 3.39 and the overall quality of the program implementation scoring 3.31 on a 4-point scale.

Melalui kegiatan PKM Internasional ini, Universitas Bunda Mulia tidak hanya memperluas wawasan peserta mengenai komunikasi lintas budaya, tetapi juga memperkuat kerjasama akademik dengan Pondok Modern Zakat Kedah, OYAGSB Universiti Utara Malaysia, dan Indonesian Multidisciplinary Lecturer Community (IMLC). Kegiatan ini menjadi wujud implementasi Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi di tingkat internasional sekaligus mendukung pencapaian Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), khususnya SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), dan SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Diharapkan kolaborasi ini dapat terus berlanjut sebagai upaya mencetak generasi muda ASEAN yang memiliki wawasan global, menghargai keberagaman budaya, serta mampu membangun komunikasi dan kolaborasi yang positif di era digital.
Through this International Community Service Program, Universitas Bunda Mulia not only broadened participants’ understanding of intercultural communication but also strengthened its academic collaboration with Pondok Modern Zakat Kedah, the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) at Universiti Utara Malaysia, and the Indonesian Multidisciplinary Lecturer Community (IMLC). The program represents the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education at the international level while contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It is expected that this collaboration will continue to foster the development of an ASEAN young generation with a global perspective, respect for cultural diversity, and the ability to build positive communication and meaningful collaboration in the digital era.
