Berbicara di depan publik dirasa mudah bagi sebagian orang, namun sebagian lagi justru sulit. Kurang percaya diri, gugup, blank, dan belum terbiasa adalah sebagian dari kesulitan itu. Atas alasan ini, pada Sabtu, 3 Oktober 2026, pembinaan Public Speaking bagi Kader PKK Kecamatan Periuk Kota Tangerang diselenggarakan. Pembinaan ini berlangsung di bawah tema, “Kader PKK Cerdas, Komunikatif dan Persuasif”. Rangkaian kegiatan dibuka oleh Wakil Ketua TP PKK Kota Tangerang, Hj. Rini Rizqiyya Maryono. Dalam sambutannya, beliau menandaskan bahwa dalam pembinaan ini, para kader diharapkan semakin percaya diri, komunikatif, dan mampu menyampaikan informasi serta menggerakkan masyarakat secara efektif. Selanjutnya, Workshop tentang Public Speaking – Keterampilan Berbicara di Depan Publik oleh Nicodemus Koli, S.Fil., M.I.Kom., dosen program studi Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM).
Public speaking comes easily to some, yet proves difficult for others. A lack of confidence, nervousness, going blank, and unfamiliarity are among the challenges faced. For this reason, a public speaking training session was held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, for PKK (Family Welfare Empowerment) cadres from the Periuk District of Tangerang City. The training was conducted under the theme: “Smart, Communicative, and Persuasive PKK Cadres.” The event series was opened by the Deputy Chairperson of the Tangerang City PKK Team, Hj. Rini Rizqiyya Maryono. In her remarks, she emphasized the hope that this training would help cadres become more confident and communicative, as well as capable of effectively conveying information and mobilizing the community. This was followed by a workshop on public speaking skills led by Nicodemus Koli, S.Fil., M.I.Kom., a lecturer in the Communication Science program at Bunda Mulia University (UBM).
Workshop ini diawali dengan pemaparan Public Speaking, dan dilanjutkan dengan praktik. Beberapa masalah yang sempat terekam antara lain, yaitu, sering gugup, panik, takut dinilai, pikiran kosong (blank) ketika berbicara di depan publik. Menginformasikan, persuasi, dan hiburan merupakan tujuan public speaking. Tujuan ini dicapai dalam proses komunikasi yang berlangsung dalam untaian unsur – unsur suatu komunikasi, yaitu pembicara (speaker) pesan (message), saluran (channel), pendengar (audience), umpan balik (feedback), gangguan (interference), serta situasi (situation). Tidak kalah penting, struktur public speaking – pembuka, isi, penutup perlu disiapkan secara sistematis. Sementara itu, postur tubuh, cara berdiri dan menempatkan kaki, gerakan tangan, kontak mata, volume suara saat berbicara, dan penampilan yang memberi kesan citra positif – profesional, intelek, kredibilitas – merupakan hal teknis yang tidak boleh terlewatkan.
The workshop began with an overview of public speaking, followed by practical exercises. Common issues identified among participants included nervousness, panic, fear of judgment, and going blank while speaking in public. The primary goals of public speaking are to inform, persuade, and entertain. These objectives are achieved through a communication process involving key elements: the speaker, message, channel, audience, feedback, interference, and situation. Equally important is the systematic preparation of the speech structure—comprising the opening, body, and conclusion. Meanwhile, technical aspects such as body posture, stance and foot placement, hand gestures, eye contact, vocal volume, and an appearance that projects a positive image—conveying professionalism, intellect, and credibility—were highlighted as crucial elements that should not be overlooked.
Setelah mendengar pemaparan, giliran para kader PKK, peserta pembinaan mempraktikannya. Dalam pendampingan mahasiswa program studi ilmu komunikasi UBM, Yehezkiel Samuel Marselino, para peserta dibagi dalam 5 (lima) kelompok. Lalu masing – masing kelompok menentukan tema, serta diskusi dan mempraktekkan public speaking sesuai arahan saat pemaparan. Semua peserta tampak bersemangat untuk praktik. Umpan balik dari peserta pada umumnya menyampaikan bahwa kegiatan ini sangat membantu, bermanfaat meningkatkan rasa percaya diri serta kemampuan berbicara di depan umum. Evaluasi dalam aspek edukatif, objektif, akuntabel, serta transparan juga menunjukan tanggapan positif dari peserta. Selain itu, peserta juga menyampaikan bahwa durasi waktunya masih kurang terutama untuk praktik. Juga, materi power point diharapkan agar lebih disederhanakan lagi. Usulan lainnya, workshop yang sama dilaksanakan lagi bahkan sampai ke setiap kelurahan.
Following the presentation, it was time for the PKK (Family Welfare Empowerment) cadres—the participants of the training—to put what they had learned into practice. Guided by Yehezkiel Samuel Marselino, a student from the UBM Communication Studies program, the participants were divided into five groups. Each group selected a theme, engaged in discussions, and practiced public speaking based on the instructions provided during the presentation. The participants showed great enthusiasm for the practical exercises. Feedback from the participants indicated that the session was highly helpful and beneficial for boosting their self-confidence and public speaking skills. Evaluations covering educational, objective, accountable, and transparent aspects also yielded positive responses. Furthermore, participants noted that the allotted time—particularly for the practical portion—was insufficient, and they suggested that the PowerPoint materials could be further simplified. Another suggestion was to hold similar workshops again, potentially extending them to every *kelurahan* (urban village/sub-district).
Kemampuan berbicara di depan publik bukan hadiah yang jatuh dari langit, namun keterampilan. Maka, untuk menjadi pembicara yang baik di depan publik, perlu latihan dan pembiasaan. Workshop ini juga merupakan implementasi Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (Abdimas) Universitas Bunda Mulia sekaligus relevan dengan mata kuliah IKH07 – Public Speaking. Turut hadir dalam rangkaian kegiatan pembinaan ini, antara lain, camat Periuk, para lurah dan ketua TP. PKK kecamatan Periuk serta ketua TP PKK kelurahan.
Public speaking ability is not a gift that falls from the sky; rather, it is a skill. Therefore, becoming an effective public speaker requires practice and habituation. This workshop serves as an implementation of Universitas Bunda Mulia’s Community Service (Abdimas) program and aligns with the IKH07 Public Speaking course. Attendees at this capacity-building event included the Head of Periuk District, local sub-district heads, the Chair of the Periuk District Family Welfare Movement (TP-PKK), and the Chairs of the sub-district level TP-PKK.
