On March 18, 2009, the students of Bunda Mulia Torism Academy held an interesting seminar entitled ’How To Operate and Manage a Successful Restaurant”. The speaker is Mr. Susanto Sukarto, an advisor from IFBEC. From this seminar, the students acquired greater knowledge on how food and beverage business is conducted in area other than the hotel industry. There were also explanation on concepts of restaurant such as formal dining, fast food, and buffet style.
Today, there are plenty of new restaurants, but some of them can only last for 1 to 2 years because they do not have a feasible perspective on the business, good human resources, and proper management and supervision. The students also learnt about some considerations that they have to take in starting a restaurant business such as choosing the type of restaurant and the menu. Competitors should be viewed not as enemies but as a challenge.
Mr. Susanto also reminded the students that restaurant owners should respect and value their employees as they are the restaurant’s frontliners. Many ways can be done to respect them, such as to reply their greetings, and others. This is necessary since tourism industry is deeply connected to human interaction. On that occasion, there were also students from other departement who attended the seminars in order to enrich their knowledge in managing and operating a certain business.
